After years of dreaming of seeing this work (my favorite) in person, sitting on the bench in the exhibition room, I notice a strange phenomenon: wherever I looked, the view was blocked by visitors taking photographs. Taking pictures not of the water lilies, but in front of them. Photographs of themselves. A brief reflection on this possible new era in the history of art consumption: the museum as a place rich in photogenic backdrops suited for successful self-portraits.
